Be it relaxing after a long day or just chilling on a slow day, a few hours spent pampering yourself with a Do-it-yourself spa for a few hours can be relaxing and refreshing. In just a few easy steps, you can enjoy the luxuries of a spa experience from the comforts of your own home.

Here is a simple recipe to relaxation. It takes about 2 hours. This is merely my own routine. It can be used as a template that can be customized as per individual’s preferences.

This is a crucial step that most people do not pay much attention to. You have to keep in mind that a spa treatment does not only make you “look better” but also makes you feel better. Light up a few scented candles. Sip a cool drink. Play some soothing background music.

I like to start with the face first. Wash your face with a gentle face wash. Next, use a facial steam machine for 10-15 min. Most websites would suggest using a pot of hot – but not boiling- water but it rarely works. Add a few drops of argon oil, axe oil and/or other preferred natural scents to the water. Following which, apply the face mask. You can buy a pre-made face mask or you can make your own. A simple recipe to make your own face mask- add 1 tbsp honey, 1 tbsp yoghurt, 2 tbsp cocoa powder and mix well. I also like to add in 1 tbsp turmeric powder as it smells good and, well, it is an Indian thing to do. But be careful not to add too much turmeric or you would end up looking yellow. After 15 min, rinse of the mask and gently message your face with an exfoliating cream/mixture (The juice of ½  a lemon, 1 cup granulated sugar, 1tbsp honey and 1 tbsp olive oil). The mixture can also be used later for the manicure and pedicure. Following this, moisturize your face. You may then apply pore toner. This step is optional but it helps to close the pores to prevent dirt from gathering and also helps to keep in the moisture.

Massage your hair and scalp with a bit of olive oil. Dip a towel in warm water and squeeze out excess water. Microwave the towel for 10 seconds. Then wrap your hair in the towel and let it be for 10 min. Bathe/Shower as per normal after that. If showering, you can turn on the tap at the highest heat setting for a while before going in. This creates a sauna kind of feel. Try to minimize wastage of water by turning on the tap only 4-5min before you go in. When your hair is half dry, apply an oil of your choice to the tips of your hair.

Start by removing any nail polish already on the nails.  Clip and file nails. Use the exfoliation cream/mixture from before to massage hands and feet. Next, massage your hands and feet with moisturizer. Apply base coat, nail polish and top coat.
